How do you win a surf contest/competition?

Im writing a paper on it.
There are a series of heats and the best three advance to the semi-finals then another heat starts with completely different people go and the top three advance then four people will be eliminated the last two will go and they crown a winner. The judges give surfers a score on speed, control and power. The lowest score is.5 and the highest score is a 10. They usually give you either a time limit to catch waves or a number of waves they must try to ride.

I am a 1st.cousin of the founder of the contest and I am very proud of him (and yes,I’m bragging about it,lol,also writing a book soon) and I was wondering if it’s a well known contest and if many people think Jeff Clark,(the founder) is cool and why ?
I paddled by him in Half Moon Bay (not Mavericks) and nodded "hi", but can’t say I know him at all. Yes, I think most people would say he is pretty cool for creating the Mavericks contest and surfing the spot by himself since 1975.
